Understanding The Basics Of Freelance Writing
It’s the most important step in your career to the successful freelance writer because if you don’t get basics about the freelance writing, then the most probably you would give up.
Please understand, there’s nothing which pays you without doing anything. So, you have to prepare for the war with your copywriting skills. Once, you have decided to start freelance writing, you should stick to your decision. Sometimes, you may not get a job for several days depending on your portfolio. Such things happen but you should improve and wait patiently for your turn.
Apart from that, English is a preferable language for most of the projects. It’s a universal language and you will get maximum offers for it. Still, there is a scope for the other languages too.
Other basic things include accurate use grammar and spellings in your copy with zero plagiarism.
People love the unique and original piece of content so that never try to copy work from others. Researching the market before starting your freelance writing job is a good idea.
The most important thing is doing your SWOT analysis to get the best value from your existing skills and improve them.
Picking A Profitable Niche
The solidly profitable niche is the first step that defines your success. There is a lot to discuss how you can choose the best niche for your freelance writing but in simple, you should pick the niche which is one you love the most, you know a lot about it (or can know) and the absolutely profitable on monetization front.
Most of the time people pick a common niche like blogging, SEO, digital marketing and don’t try to know, there are other places where they can write the beautiful article. So just don’t fall common & competitive niches as it will limit your chances of earning in your initial days before getting a ton of authority.
The niches like finance, automobile insights, fashion, tourism, baby care, health, feminism, education, etc. that require a lot of expertise are the best to start with if your education and/or experience are based on them.
Practicing & Creating Portfolio
Don’t be another writer who is sitting and waiting for a job. Select one of the profitable niches mentioned above or research on your own and start practicing with it. Write at least 2 articles per day (at least for a month) which are deeply researched and you think not a crap.
Once, you get extremely familiar with writing about that particular topic, then create a beautiful portfolio to showcase your copywriting skills to the world. Craft the best pieces or samples of your work and make a collection of it.
Let people know about you. If you are a good writer, then you’ll definitely get offers for collaboration or contribution as a copywriter or a content manager.
Creating a blog is the best way to create your portfolio as you’ll get exposure to your skills and also earn money through other channels of monetization in addition to it.
It is highly recommended that you should include your educational qualifications and work experience if you have any with relevant to the particular niche that you have selected. Creating an outstanding title, bio and professional image would increase your chances to get noticed by clients by many times.
Consider, adding bullet points to show your expertise or specialty that you have. This step is the foundation of your career so you can focus on it before running behind the actual work.
Finding The Freelance Writing Opportunities
Finding clients for freelance writing who will give you the opportunity of content writing has not remained so difficult. Now, you can easily get a job as a freelance writer on freelance marketplaces and job boards.
You can also work privately with your clients outside the freelance marketplaces but I don’t recommend it for beginners as increased numbers of freelance writing scams nowadays.
There are many websites that will give you copywriting jobs and claiming 100% legit, but it’s not true. So, I have mentioned only the handpicked websites and freelance marketplaces to start with your freelance writing work.
These websites or freelance marketplaces may have the unique terms and conditions to roll on their job board. Some of them may conduct your basic skill test (generally, a grammar test) to check your ability and validate you as a freelance writer.
It’s essential to them because the clients want only quality material and no any marketplace wants to lose the reputation only because of your mistakes.
There are only a few freelance marketplaces & websites that I trust to get a job as a freelance writer.
List Of Online Destinations To Get Freelance Writing Jobs
- The Write Life
- Blogging Pro
- Flex Jobs
- Be A Freelance Blogger
- LinkedIn Jobs
Since I have mentioned these sites where you can get the freelance writing jobs, don’t rush immediately behind that. There are many people around a few hundreds and thousands like you to compete with you for winning the bid. It tends to lower the price of the bids and you’ll need to work for less amount than usual.
I don’t recommend to work for such bids. Continue with your standards and have a little patience before getting value for your work.
Don’t fall for freelance writing scams as newbies allure into these situations often due to attractive deals from the site. Even, don’t think about the sites like Freelancer & Guru which are a crapshoot when it comes to getting the project on regular profiles. Unless you have solid profile & reputation, don’t go with them.
Writing The Astonishing Contents
Now the actual work starts here. If you have a highly relevant profile and beautiful portfolio, the clients will approach and ask you to craft their articles, either through the freelance marketplace or privately.
You can interact with them with the accessible medium like email, phone call, live chat, messages, video call or any inbuilt system available to connect.
First of all, engage your clients to get rewarded with their projects but before that try to understand the work requirements of them like a special instruction like delivery time, the tone of copy, the length of copy (i.e. word count), etc. and payment details.
If you work on online freelance platforms, they have all features inbuilt and mostly the payment info is disclosed. They also take care about securing your contents and payments. But, if you are working privately, then try to convince your client to send 30-50% deposits upfront. Without which never work for anybody and don’t look even the project is highly lucrative and a long-term deal.
Once, you have done with all formalities mentioned above, then research market or the web according to the need of contents. You can also try reading several books for a similar topic to get ideas & extra knowledge.
Craft your copy carefully then, and do better than the client has told. Be the best in your area so no one can point a single mistake in your copy.
Always write engaging copy with the tone mentioned by the client whether it is a friendly and conversational or 100% professional.
Don’t just stuff unnecessary words again & again to increase the length of copy. Make it simple, yet informative, authoritative, and astonishing.
There are many types of freelance writing that I have mentioned here.
Types Of Freelance Writing
- Article and Blog posts
- Technical Jargon
- Product Description
- Case Study/Researched post
- Business/Corporate Copywriting
- Newsletters & Auto-Responder Series
- Essay & Academic Material
Still, there are many types of copywriting and people group them according to their views.
Once, you create a copy, then proofread it for spelling & grammatical errors. Either give to a native person to proofread it or use the online software like Grammarly to DIY with a few clicks.
Complete and deliver your work before the deadline with the best quality you can give.
Promoting Your Work & Building A Relationship With Your Clients
The project gets completed successfully, but what is the next?
You have chosen the freelance writing as a career so that getting a recurring income by both new as well as repeating clients is very important.
So, ask your client to share your work. Don’t hesitate to do that because it gives more leads to you. You can also ask for referrals if you are providing the quality throughout your project. Testimonials also similarly important as the other means of promotions and build a trust or credibility among people where you have more chances to get hired.
You can also DIY by promoting yourself as a freelance writer on every possible media even a social media to grab the attention of maximum people and tell them about your new job and achievements after completing the project.
In ghostwriting, you have limited options to push yourself as a freelance writer but the word-of-mouth plays a vital role here to grab more loyal customers to you.
Giving discounts on the bulk orders is also a good deal (or strategy) to fill your work calendar.
The last but the not least is to develop new complimentary skills relevant to your niche required for your career growth.
If you have problem or weakness with anything, don’t run away. Master it and be an authority. Your every article or piece of writing must be better than the previous one.
Also, ask people for suggestions. Don’t fear when you get criticized by others just move ahead and make yourself the best. And, keep it up.
I always suggest to start freelance writing is a hobby in your spare time and scale it to full-time professional career or full-fledged business. Still, you’ll earn a small amount in your initial days of career.
Isn’t it nice?
